Medical Insurance Options In Dubai

Insurance Plans

The UAE has one of the world’s best-funded, high-quality healthcare systems in the world. Free for UAE nationals, it’s functional and comprehensive. But if you’re a foreign national working in the country, you’ll need to secure quality healthcare insurance.

Dubai Health Insurance law mandates that all residents must maintain insurance coverage meeting or surpassing the Dubai Health Authority’s (DHA) minimum requirements.

For UAE nationals in Dubai, Saada offers health insurance coverage to those not benefiting from government health programs. Saada enrollees can receive treatment at private healthcare providers and DHA health facilities. Furthermore, citizens have the option to forego private healthcare coverage and enroll in the government scheme.

Private Health Insurance

As a non-resident in Dubai, it’s crucial for your sponsor or employer to arrange valid health insurance for you. However, not all positions include health coverage, and the extent of coverage for your dependents may vary based on your preferences and their needs.

Since private health insurance providers operate differently, it’s important to understand their processes, including claims, covered treatments, and the available payment methods before selecting a policy.

Refer to the UAE Insurance Authority for a comprehensive list of approved insurers. Ensure you choose a reputable provider to guarantee valid coverage. Remember, if you plan to reside in Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE, you’ll need to demonstrate proof of adequate health insurance coverage to comply with government regulations.

Public Health Insurance

Each Emirate has its own system of public health insurance. However, this state-funded option is limited to essential healthcare such as emergency treatment and immunization. While the list of primary services included in the cover differs between Emirates, they usually include:

  • Initial examinations and diagnostics
  • GP care
  • Physio
  • Radiology
  • Testing
  • Prescriptions

The likes of dental, optical, and cosmetic health services aren’t covered by public health insurance.

Essential Benefits Plan

In Dubai, there’s a special plan called the Essential Benefits Plan (EBP). It helps low-income earners, especially those making less than AED 4,000, and their families get medical coverage.

This plan costs around AED 550 to AED 650 every year. It includes important things like maternity care, medicine, tests, surgeries, and help for emergencies. It also covers both outpatient and inpatient treatments, but there are a few limits to consider:

  • An annual claim limit of AED 150,000.
  • No coverage for pre-existing or chronic conditions in the first six months.
  • A 20% co-pay, capped at AED 500 per visit, for essential inpatient healthcare services.
  • An annual cap of AED 1,000 for inpatient services.
  • An annual limit of AED 1,500 for medicine or prescriptions.
  • A 30% co-pay for every prescription.
