Trade Name Reservation in Dubai: Rules, Checks and Validity

Trade Name Reservation in Dubai: Rules, Checks and Validity

Trade name reservation in Dubai locks in your company name. You do it with Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). DET licenses mainland companies. You reserve the name before your licence. It’s quick when your name follows the rules. It stalls when it doesn’t. We reserve names for clients as part of mainland business setup in Dubai.

How does trade name reservation in Dubai work?

You check your name on the Invest in Dubai name checker. You pick your business sectors. DET reviews the name against its rules. You then pay within 72 hours of the payment voucher. Your reservation lasts six months. Get your licence inside that window, or renew.

The Invest in Dubai name checker is DET’s own tool.

Dubai trade name rules

DET publishes its business name terms on the name checker. Here’s what they say, in plain words.

Words you can’t use

  • “Allah”, “Lord”, or any names of Almighty Allah, such as Al-Qadir or Al-Razzaq.
  • Names of governments, unless that country’s embassy approves it.
  • Names that suggest links to political groups, religious sects or bodies like “FBI” or “Mafia”.
  • Indecent words, even inside a personal name.
  • Names that aren’t true or that mislead.
  • Opening words like “Universal”, “Middle East” or “International”, or their Arabic versions.

How the name must be built

  • Your activity and legal form go in the name. DET’s example is “XYZ Contracting LLC”, not “XYZ”.
  • The Ministry of Economy and Tourism also asks for the legal form abbreviation after the name, like “LLC”.
  • You need an Arabic and an English version. DET wants transliteration, not translation.
  • No symbols. Dots, slashes and similar characters aren’t allowed.

Names that clash

  • Your name must be unique for the same or similar activities.
  • It can’t match or look like a registered trademark. DET names “Emaar” and “Kentucky” as examples.
  • A franchise can use its brand name. You give DET the franchise contract.

Names that pass and names that fail

Here’s how DET’s rules play out on real-looking names. The Al Shamsi, XYZ and Al Saqer names are DET’s own examples.

Name Result Why
Al Shamsi Properties Fails A family name alone isn’t allowed
Ahmed Al Shamsi Properties Passes the family-name rule First and last name together are fine. Add the legal form, like “LLC”, before you submit
XYZ Fails No activity or legal form in the name
XYZ Contracting LLC Passes Activity and legal form are both there
International Spices Trading LLC Fails Starts with “International”
Blue.Line Trading LLC Fails Contains a dot
Al Saqer Properties (for الصقر للعقارات) Right English form Transliterated, as in DET’s example
The Falcon Properties (for الصقر للعقارات) Fails Translated, not transliterated

Test your shortlist against this table before you pay anything. Keep two backup names ready in case your first choice is taken.

How to check if a trade name is available

Start on the name checker. Type your preferred name and pick the business sectors you’re interested in. You can pick more than one sector.

Then check two more things yourself:

  • Trademarks. DET says trademarks sit with the Trademarks Section of the Ministry of Economy (now the Ministry of Economy and Tourism). A similar trademark can block your name.
  • Your activity. Your name has to match your activity. Settle your activity codes first, then the name.

How long does a trade name reservation last?

A Dubai trade name reservation lasts six months. You must pay the fee within 72 hours of getting the payment voucher. When the six months end, you renew and pay again. If you don’t renew or get your licence, DET cancels the name.

Six months sounds like a lot. It isn’t if your activity needs a second approval, or your office lease takes time. Start the rest of your file as soon as DET confirms the name, then apply for your UAE trade licence. Our guide on how to register a company in Dubai shows the steps that follow.

What a trade name reservation costs

DET shows the fee on your payment voucher. It doesn’t publish a single figure on the name checker. Premium names cost more. DET adds an extra fee of AED 1,000 to 3,000 for a premium business name.

DET can also charge unpaid premium name fees from earlier years. It can cancel or change a name that looks like an existing one.

Free zone names follow their own rules

Each free zone runs its own name check. Its rules, fees and validity can differ from DET’s. Check with the zone before you print anything with your name on it.

A rejected name sends you back to the start of the check. We check your shortlist against DET’s rules before we submit it. Book a call about mainland company formation and we’ll reserve your name as part of your setup.

This guide summarises DET’s published business name terms as we last read them. DET can change its rules and fees. Confirm the current terms on the name checker or with our team before you apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my family name as my trade name?

Not on its own. DET allows the first and last name together, like “Ahmed Al Shamsi Properties”. The family name alone, like “Al Shamsi Properties”, fails.

Do I need an Arabic trade name?

Yes. Your name must appear in Arabic and English. DET wants the Arabic name transliterated into English, not translated. “Al Saqer Properties” is DET’s own example.

Is trade name reservation the same as trademark registration?

No. A trade name is your company’s legal name with DET. A trademark protects your brand and sits with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism. You can hold both.

What happens if my reservation expires?

DET asks you to renew it and pay the fee again. If you don’t get your licence, DET cancels the name automatically.
